The Many Steps To Securing A Medicare Wheelchair

You cannot help if you have an illness or injury and before you know it, that illness or injury is costing you a lot of money out of pocket. If you have insurance, you would be surprised at how much you are still paying out of pocket on top of your monthly or quarterly payment to the insurance company. There are several different ways to cut health costs without sacrificing benefits. You need to do some research in order to find out what you qualify for, how much you can spend and what is available within your means. If you need a wheelchair, you may have realized that there are some restrictions with insurance companies as to how much they will pay for one. However, you can always see if you can apply for a Medicare wheelchair to get you through until your injury is healed.

Like any other insurance company, Medicare has its own rules and regulations, and some may find that it is quite confusing when they are trying to obtain a Medicare wheelchair. When you are considering a Medicare wheelchair you may need to pay for the wheelchair first and then apply to get reimbursed for your expenses. If you are applying for one of these wheelchairs, you cannot just pick out which one you want and then expect Medicare to pay you back. The company has strict guidelines that you need to follow in order to purchase any of its wheelchairs.

You may apply for a Medicare wheelchair if Medicare is your primary insurance, but if you have an HMO, one of these wheelchairs is not an option.  You must meet all of the requirements for receiving Medicare equipment, and you cannot have received any similar equipment from the company in the past.  Your doctor must submit an order stating the medical need of the equipment you are requesting, and you must furnish any other complete documentation to Medicare in order to qualify for a Medicare wheelchair.

Medicare does not pay 100% of the cost of the wheelchair, but it will pay 80%. If you have secondary insurance, it will usually pay the 20% that is remaining. However, settling these payments is a long, hard process, but if you truly cannot afford a wheelchair, it is a necessary process.  Manual Medicare wheelchairs are the number one choice of Medicare. You can become eligible for a power wheelchair only if you have been found incapable of operating a manual wheelchair due to a medical condition that affects your arms.

In order to see if you qualify for a Medicare wheelchair you need to check the Medicare website first.  Here you can hopefully find out any information that you need to get your wheelchair paid for quickly. Depending on the company, payment in full may be required first, and then Medicare will need to reimburse you. It may take a while to get your money back, so you need to ask someone in the Medicare department before you spend all your hard-earned money to purchase your wheelchair. You may also consider renting a wheelchair until you get your Medicare wheelchair. Most hospitals or healthcare equipment stores will rent wheelchairs out on a temporary basis, saving you a lot of money.
